Hyde Lodge youngsters to take part in charity run at Olympic Park

Anthony (22), Mitchell (22), Ricky (20) and Ayisha (22) from Aurora Hyde Lodge, will be taking part in the world’s first all-inclusive sensory fun run at the Olympic Park in London on September 4th.

The Parallel London event marks the four-year anniversary of the 2012 ParaOlympic Games and is the first of its kind seeing able bodied and disabled people taking part together.

The event will be a great achievement for the quartet who have a mixture of autism, learning and physical disabilities such as visual impairment and mobility problems.

The team are raising money for Whizz-Kidz the charity that supports disabled children by providing them wheel chairs and mobility aids. The charity has supported the school in the past by providing mobility trikes and the school now wanted to give something back.

We spoke to Mandy Badger, Manager at Aurora Hyde Lodge, who said she was delighted that the young adults could take part and were able to support a charity so close to their hearts.

“This is a huge achievement for our team. It will be their first time in London and we have been working with them over the past few weeks, preparing them for the experience, making sure that they will get the most possible out of it."

“We all loved watching the ParaOlympics in 2012 so we’re excited about going to the Olympic Park where it all happened. So far we have already raised nearly £1,000 for Whizz-Kidz and it’s great to be able to give something back.”

The team are taking part in the Super Sensory 1km race, on September 4th, especially designed for individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities, individuals on the autistic spectrum and those who engage with the world in a primarily sensory way. The race includes stops every 300m to do a sensory activity ranging from sounds and smells, to textures and colours. The guys will be supported on the day by a team of staff from Hyde Lodge, helping them get to London and get round the track.
