Assistant Headteacher (SENCO)

Salary: Pay in line with leadership scale.

Hours: Full time, term time (50% classroom based)

Aurora is an innovative provider of education and care for children, young people and adults with special educational needs and disabilities. We are currently looking for a dynamic and creative Assistant Headteacher to join our growing team and be a key player in our developing service.

Aurora Hanley School, opened in September 2017 as a special school for children with complex communication and social difficulties.   We provide flexible day and residential placements for students aged 6 to 19 years whose difficulties are typically associated with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other associated issues that impact their emotional health and wellbeing and create barriers to learning.

The school provides a modern learning and living environment designed for the students’ needs. In February 2018 capacity at the school increases with the addition of new residential accommodation adjacent to the school building which means even more young people will be able to benefit from the specialist support we provide.

The school is going from strength to strength and has good relationships with the local authority and the local community. It’s an exciting time to be part of a new and developing school and we’re looking for passionate and dedicated people to be part of this exciting journey. As Assistant Headteacher you will make a valuable contribution to shaping the ‘outstanding’ school that we want to be.

The Role:

We have an exciting new role available for a leader in SENCO looking for a new challenge in their career.

As Assistant Headteacher for SENCO you will be well-qualified and experienced with the ability to take responsibility for the leadership and further development of this key area across the school.

You’ll be working closely with the Headteacher and wider leadership team to work to ensure all pupils are supported to achieve in line with their EHCP.

The SENCO will also have responsibility for the personal and professional welfare of their staff, the efficient organisation of the department and for the quality of education experience offered to the pupils.

The role may require participation in physical intervention and personal care routines.

You’ll already be an experienced professional but also bring enthusiasm and energy to the role along with a commitment for developing an outstanding school.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • To support the Headteacher in leading, managing and organising the school to the highest professional standards with specific designated areas of responsibility

  • To work closely with the Headteacher in promoting the strategic development of the school, ensuring the vision of the school is communicated in compelling terms to all staff

  • To manage the school in the Headteacher’s absence

  • To assist the Headteacher in the continuous improvement and development of the school

  • To carry out the professional duties of a class teacher as required

  • To assist the Headteacher in monitoring and quality assuring the standards of teaching, learning and assessment across the school

  • To take a lead role in the day to day organising of the school to ensure a purposeful and safe environment, including close liaison with care managers

  • To take lead responsibility for promoting the welfare and safeguarding of students within the school and ensure all staff share this commitment


  • Qualified Teacher Status with degree qualification (QTS teacher reference number required)

  • Evidence of recent continuous professional development relevant to the post


  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of how to work effectively with students who have SEND

  • Clear understanding of the role of the Assistant Headteacher within a special school environment

  • Working knowledge of the SEN code of practice

  • Sound understanding of the use of data to track the progress of students.

  • Knowledge of Safeguarding issues and their significance within a highly specialist learning environment

  • Awareness of the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014 and Ofsted framework for the inspection on non-association independent schools
